NASIR PUT Brandy in a backseat that was so small she had to sit with her feet across the seat. His mom looked at the car, then back at him, her eyes begging for an explanation.
âIt belongs to a friend, Mom.â
Marcy grunted and strapped herself in.
When they pulled up to the Ritz-Carlton, Nasir handed the parking attendant a ten-dollar bill and told him to keep the car close by. Then he and his daughter escorted his mother up to the nicest suite she'd ever seen. A California king-size bed sat on a raised platform in front of a wall-size window overlooking the beautiful Atlanta skyline. There was a plasma-screen television set hanging from the wall over the fireplace. Soft leather sofas and ottomans were everywhere and there was a dining-room table long enough to seat twenty people.
âOh, Daddy, can I stay with Grandma?â Brandy gushed.
Nasir smiled as his daughter ran around from room to room. His mom stood there speechless.
âI think Grandma could use a little quiet time. Maybe you can stay with her another night.â
Marcy looked at Nasir with raised brows.
âWait a minute, Nasir. Where are you getting money from for all this?â
âI already told you. I have friends,â he said, fanning her away.
âThere's a swimming pool in the bathroom,â Brandy said, waving her grandmother over.
âOh my. That is a rather large tub,â Marcy said, still stunned. âNasir, this must've cost a fortune.â
âNot really. As a matter of fact it didn't cost me a dime. One of my old teammates runs this place.â
âI wonder if they have any good books up here,â Marcy said, walking over to the glassed-in bookshelf. âI don't remember the last time I cuddled up with a good book.â
âWhy don't you do that tonight?â Nasir said, grabbing the remote control and turning on the fireplace. âIt's all ambiance. No heat comes from this thing.â
âThat's nice,â Marcy said, sitting down at the desk. She willed herself not to cry.
Nasir noticed his mother was overwhelmed and wanted to give her time to adjust to her surroundings. He looked at his watch.
âCome on, precious. We need to get back over to Grandma's so we can meet your mom.â
âAwww. I wanted to stay with Grandma.â
âI'm hurt.â Nasir made a pouting face. âYou wanna leave me already?â
âOkay, I'll stay with you,â Brandy said, hugging her father. âBye, Grandma.â
Marcy reached out for a hug and Brandy walked over.
Nasir reached down and hugged his mother.
âI want you to enjoy yourself this evening. Order all the room service you want. And just enjoy the evening, okay?â
âOkay,â Marcy said, nodding her head. âSo I'll see you in the morning?â
âFirst thing. Sleep well, Mom,â Nasir said. He paused and looked back at his mom before walking out.
